We want every part of guswithus.org to work for you, whether you use a screen reader, a keyboard, voice control, magnification, or none of those.

The standard we build to

We build guswithus.org to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.2 at Level AA. That is the standard courts and federal agencies use to judge whether a website meets the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 508.

We are not claiming perfection. We are telling you the target we build to and what we do when we miss it.

What that means on this site

  • Every page starts with a "Skip to main content" link, so you do not tab through the navigation on every visit.
  • You can reach and operate every link, button, and filter with a keyboard alone. Nothing traps your focus.
  • The focus indicator is a dark ring with a gold halo, sized to stay visible on both light and dark backgrounds.
  • Text meets a contrast ratio of at least 4.5 to 1 against its background. Buttons and large headings meet at least 3 to 1.
  • Every page has one h1 and a heading order you can navigate by.
  • Images that carry meaning have alt text. Decorative shapes and icons are hidden from screen readers instead of read aloud as noise.
  • In the Resource Center, the result count is announced when you filter or search, so you are not left guessing what changed.
  • Tap targets are at least 44 by 44 pixels on phones.
  • If your device is set to reduce motion, the animations do not run.
  • The site works at 200 percent zoom and down to a 320 pixel wide screen without side-scrolling.

What we know is still imperfect

Three parts of this site come from other companies, and we do not control their code.

  • The donation form on the homepage is built and hosted by Zeffy. If it does not work for you, call us at (718) 775-5050 or email info@guswithus.org and we will take your gift another way.
  • The Resource Center links out to city agencies, state agencies, and other nonprofits. We check that the link goes to the real application page. We cannot fix the accessibility of the page it lands on.
  • Our fonts load from Google Fonts. If they fail to load, the site falls back to your system font and stays readable.

We review the site against WCAG 2.2 AA and fix what we find. The last review was August 2026.

Tell us about a barrier

If something on this site blocked you, tell us. You do not need to know the technical term for it. Describe what you were trying to do and what happened.

We answer within two business days. If the fix will take longer than that, we will tell you when to expect it, and we will give you another way to get what you needed in the meantime.
